Today the students will be using Pixie to finish their Snowflake Poem project. They will practice changing the way the "text" of their poem looks by changing the font style and color of the text. Each student wrote a cinquain poem about snowflakes in class. This poem has been added to a snowflake picture they created during computer class. Below is an example of what they will be starting with and the result after making changes to the text.
First grade students have begun a map skills study in their classroom. Today students will explore maps and map symbols in computer class while helping a tour bus driver navigate National Geographic's Adventure Island.
In celebration of winter, the students are going to design their own snowflakes using a free online tool. This is reminiscent of cutting out snowflakes from folded paper. This activity works on fine motor and mouse skills. It is always one of the favorite computer activities! They will write a snowflake poem in the classroom to accompany their snowflakes to create a beautiful snowflake project.
Today in first grade we will continue with our beginning coding concepts activities that we introduced during Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week in December. Students will continue exploring with Kodable and then will try a new App called Puppy Adventure.
During December there is a special holiday version of Poisson Rouge that contains additional links to holiday-themed activities which are only available during this time of year. In class today, students will enjoy exploring these new interactive activities.
In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, this week our school will participate in the Hour of Code (a global movement to introduce coding and computer science to students). Today in first grade we will introduce beginning coding concepts using a fun coding App named Kodable.
Students will continue to work with the Investigations in Math Shapes software. Today they will explore Puzzles, in which they learn how to use shapes to completely fill in an outline. Using the mouse, they will explore different ways to manipulate a variety of shapes to fill in puzzle forms correctly.
First grade students are getting ready for the annual Thanksgiving Feast! Today students will do an activity using Pixie in which they correctly identify various articles of clothing worn by Pilgrims. They will use "click and drag" with the mouse to complete the activity after they type their name.
Today first graders will continue to work with Math Shapes software. They will explore shapes in an activity called Quick Images where students look briefly at an image made up of shapes before the image goes away. They then work to build a copy of the image from memory using those same shapes in the work space on the left hand side.
Last week the first grade class enjoyed a field trip to a Pumpkin Patch. Today in computer class they are going to carve pumpkins with two online pumpkin carving activities that let them practice their computer skills while making some great carved pumpkins!
