It's winter and everyone is looking forward to a good snow storm. Today the kids will be making snowflakes in computer class. They will be writing poems about their snowflakes in the classroom. Here's a link to the site they will be using:
Today we talked about how the Internet is made up of millions of computers located all over the world. When you access a website, your computer may be talking to another one in France, China, California, New Jersey, or Canada. When you access something on the Internet from school, you can also get to it from home. You just have to enter the URL (or address) of the site. To access the Internet you have to use a web browser like Internet Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, etc. At school we have Internet Explorer and Chrome loaded and we primarily use Internet Explorer in class.
The students practiced by starting up Internet Explorer. Their homepage is the 1st grade Free Time page. I showed them how to:
Today the First Grade class will be practicing their skip counting. They will use Pixie to finish a dot-to-dot picture. They will learn how to draw straight lines, use color fill (select color and texture), spray grass, and use the "undo" command. Here's an example of what it will look like:
The First Graders finished their quilt squares. You should check them out. They turned out awesome!
Today the first graders will be using Investigations Shapes Software to make quilt squares. Here's a description from Investigations math curriculum on the activity, "In first grade, students continue to use Shapes to think about attributes of the pattern block shapes and relationships among them....They use motions such as flips and turns to create designs with pattern blocks, and to fill provided outlines in as many different ways as possible. They begin to think about the idea of a unit as they design quilt squares using squares and triangles, which are repeated to create a quilt pattern."
The students will come to class with their "paper quilt square" and replicate it on the computer. I will show them how to:
Today I will be talking to the students about how to get on the Internet by starting Internet Explorer. I will also show them how to adjust the volume for their headsets. Then they will explore a site called Poisson Rouge (Red Fish).
Last week the students learned how to use the Shift Key and Space Bar. They used Pixie and typed their name. Then they decorated the page with stickers. Many of the students are still not comfortable using the Shift Key, so we'll be doing a similar project this week.
