Today I will introduce the class to the concept of spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are used for information that is laid out in tables. People use spreadsheets to sort, calculate, and graph. The students will learn 4 new vocabulary words – worksheet, column, row, and cell. We will also do an exercise where they will start Microsoft Excel, learn to navigate a spreadsheet, identify cells, and enter data.

Watch a Brainpop movie called "cameras" that describes how cameras work (both film and digital). We'll talk about pixels and the terms "mega" and "giga". I'll show the students how to download photos from a camera and put the photos into a folder on a computer. The students will access their photos using Windows Explorer. Today we will continue to work on our Luray Caverns project. They will use Pixie to draw a picture of Luray Cavern and then narrate it by reading their essays. Here is an example of one from last year... The students will be using Pixie to create a drawing of their trip to Luray Cavern. I will demonstrate to them how to use the draw tool, paint fill tool, and smear feature. Here are some photos of the field trip to help them out: Last week the students used Microsoft Word. I gave them a glimpse into using the "ribbons", then let them explore. I had them get up and demonstrate to the class what they figured out. It was amazing what they learned. We looked at changing the way fonts looked, inserting shapes, wordart, pictures, and word art, and much more.
This week we're going to take a more measured approach. The kids are going to systematically learn to change the way fonts look including: bold, italics, underline, font size, color, and changing fonts. Mrs. Dixon will be posting the weekly spelling words on Spelling City. The students can use Spelling City to practice their spelling words. In class we will be exploring some of the features. The students will play hang mouse and unscramble, and taking the practice test.
