This week the students are learning about the computer file system. We will start the class off by discussing how they save their work papers. Then we will talk about how computers store information using storage devices such as a hard drive. We will discuss the importance of organizing things and how confusing it would be if they just threw all their papers into the bottom of a backpack. The same thing is true for the computer. You need to store the files in an organized way to make it easy to find it again. We will use a small “paper filing cabinet" and explain that the computer uses a similar system. This visual aid has folders for each grade and then inside the second grade folder there is a folder for each student. We will discuss how computers folders are set up the same way. We will also discuss when to use “save” and “save as” as well as the importance of saving things in their “personal folders” instead of on the computer they are using, and how the Network Server works in our school.
