This week students will learn about the computer file system. We will discuss how they save their work papers at school, and compare how computers store information using storage devices such as a hard drive. We will talk about the importance of organizing things and how confusing it would be if they just threw all their papers into the bottom of a backpack. The same thing is true for the computer. You need to store the files in an organized way to make it easy to find it again. We will discuss how computers folders are set up the same way as a small "paper filing cabinet system." We will also discuss when to use “save” and “save as” as well as the importance of saving things in their “personal folders” instead of on the computer they are using, and how the Network Server works in our school. After this discussion, the students will work with text in Microsoft Word. They will learn how to systematically change the way fonts look including use of bold, italics, underline, font size, color, justify, and changing fonts. They will practice saving the changes they make to a document in their personal folder.
