In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, this week our school will be participating in the Hour of Code (a global movement to introduce coding and computer science to students). Today in second grade we will use iPads to introduce beginning coding concepts using the fun iPad apps below.
Today the students will explore interactive activities on the Jan Brett website during their computer class. They are currently doing an author study of Jan Brett in their classroom.
Today students will review their introductory keyboarding skills with an interactive learning tool called Keyseeker. The students use color bands on their wrists to help remember which hand to use.
The second grade class recently took a field trip to Luray Caverns. Today the students will be using Pixie software to create a drawing of a favorite place in Luray Caverns. They will practice using the draw tool, paint fill tool, and smear feature to create their drawings. Below are some pictures from Luray Caverns to inspire them!
Today the students will refer to the image of the monster they created to fill in a writing prompt that prompts them to write down descriptions with adjectives for the various parts of their monsters. This will be the basis for the written descriptions in paragraph form that they will write when they return to their classroom.
Today in honor of the Great Grymes Pumpkin Carving Contest being held next week, we are going to carve pumpkins using an online web application during computer class. The pumpkins should be created to match one of the contest categories: Scariest, Funniest, Most Creative, Celebrity Look- Alike, or Strangest Creature.
Students will continue to work on creating monsters using Pixie that they will use as the subject of a descriptive writing project. At the end of the class the students will select the monster from the ones they created to use for their written descriptions.
Today the second grade will begin a collaborative project between their computer class, their homeroom classroom, and the library called the Monster Adjective Project. They will use Pixie and their imaginations to create pictures of an original monster. Next week each student will select one of the monster pictures they create to become the subject of an adjective-filled descriptive paragraph.
