Today second grade will have a chance to explore fun math activities that will help them review math skills they have learned through the year. They are invited to use this link throughout the summer to practice math with these games.
Today second grade students will have an opportunity to continue practicing their beginning coding skills. They will continue with Lightbot, and other favorite introductory coding activities on the Code.org website.
Today students will review their introductory keyboarding skills with Keyseeker. This tool helps the students practice location of letters on the keyboard while prompting them to use the correct hand to strike the key. The students use color bands on their wrists to prompt them to use the correct hand.
Today the second grade students will go to the computer lab to begin a drawing of a monster that they have not seen on PIXIE software by using only an adjective-filled written description by one of their classmates.
Today we will begin a project about graphing using spreadsheets after a brief review about the benefits of graphing. During math in their classroom, students previously sorted a small bag of Legos by color and graphed them onto a bar graph worksheet. They will use the same data as a basis for an Excel Spreadsheet to create a bar graph; we will also look at other ways to present the data using Excel spreadsheets and compare them (e.g. column, line, pie, bar, doughnut, etc.)
Today I will introduce the class to the concept of spreadsheets. They will learn that spreadsheets are used for information that is laid out in tables and that people use spreadsheets to sort, calculate, and graph. The students will learn 4 new vocabulary words – worksheet, column, row, and cell. We will also do an exercise in which they will start Microsoft Excel, learn to navigate a spreadsheet, identify cells, and enter data which will create a recognizable picture.
This week students will work to create a unique look for the text of their snow poem, which has been added to an image of a snowflake they created earlier using an online tool. They will use features in Pixie to change the font style, color, and size of the text. The completed project will be printed out and displayed in their classroom.
This week marks the 113th anniversary of Dr. Seuss' birth. Since 1998, the National Education Association (NEA) has designated March 2 as Read Across America day. In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday this week and as part of our Grymes Book Week celebration, students will play educational games and learn more about Dr. Seuss' many books as they explore the two websites linked below.
Today second grade students will have an opportunity to continue practicing their beginning coding skills. They will have a choice to explore additional introductory coding activities on the Code.org website.
Today the students will be completing the Fun With Fonts activity using features for text in Microsoft Word. They will systematically change the way fonts look including use of bold, italics, underline, font size, color, justify, and changing fonts. They will also practice saving the changes they make to the document in their personal folder.
