Today students will continue to create intricate snowflakes using the Make-A-Flake online program. Each student will select one of their favorite creations to be used as the background for their poem in the Snowflake Poem project. When students have completed the snowflake for their project, they can try out the additional online snowflake site shown below on the right.
In celebration of winter, the students are going to design their own intricate snowflakes using a free online tool. This is reminiscent of cutting out snowflakes from folded paper. This activity works on fine motor and mouse skills. It is always one of the favorite computer activities! They are writing snowflake poems in the classroom to accompany their snowflakes.
Today second grade students will have an opportunity to continue practicing their beginning coding skills. They will work first with Lightbot, and then have a choice between favorite introductory coding activities on the Code.org website.
In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, our school will be participating in the Hour of Code (a global movement to introduce coding and computer science to students) this week. Today in second grade the fun Apps below will be used to introduce beginning coding concepts.
Students will use the Investigations Shapes software today to review math concepts about shapes and patterns while using computer skills to manipulate the shapes to fit in puzzles.
Today the students will refer to the image of the monster they created to fill in a writing prompt that prompts them to write down descriptions with adjectives for the various parts of their monsters. This will be the basis for the written descriptions in paragraph form that they will write when they return to their classroom.
Students will continue to work on creating monsters using Pixie that they will use as the subject of a descriptive writing project. They will be encouraged to add details to their monsters that they will be able to describe with adjectives. At the end of the class the students will select the monster from the ones they created to use for their written descriptions.
Today in honor of the annual Great Grymes Pumpkin Carving Contest, we are going to carve pumpkins using two online web applications during computer class. Students will create pumpkins to match some of the contest categories: Scariest, Funniest, Most Creative, Celebrity Look- Alike, or Strangest Creature. After students have completed their pumpkins, they will enjoy two other interactive Halloween themed computer activities.
Today the second grade will begin a collaborative project between their computer class, their homeroom classroom, and the library called the Monster Adjective Project. They will use PIXIE today, along with their imaginations, to create pictures of an original monster. Next week each student will select one of the monster pictures they created to become the subject of an adjective-filled descriptive paragraph.
Today students will review their introductory keyboarding skills with an interactive learning tool called Keyseeker. This tool helps the students practice placement of letters on a keyboard and prompts them to use the correct hand to strike the key. The keyboard is split into purple for left and green for right hand. The students use color bands on their wrists to help remember which hand to use.
