The fourth grade class has been watching videos about Edith Kaphuka, a 13-year-old student at Domasi Mission Primary School in Zomba District, Malawi (Global Lives Project shoot in 2007). The oldest of four girls, Edith has many responsibilities at her home in Ngwale Village, such as fetching water, cleaning the dishes, and gardening. Her little sister, Memory, is her best friend; when the two are together, they are nearly inseparable. While Edith and her family are Yao, they more readily speak Chichewa, Malawi's national language. They have taken notes about how their lives are similar and different than Edith's. They will be making a magazine showing what they've learned.

I can't begin to tell you what a great job this class has done keyboarding. So many of them are so close to learning all their alphabetic keys and basic punctuation. We are going to have one more class to see if we can't get them to the finish line. Here are the two links they will need.
The fourth grade is starting the keyboarding unit. Today we'll do an introduction to keyboarding, review how to use the NEO, and how to use Typing Agent. The NEO is a keyboarding device they can use to practice in the classroom and at home, Typing Agent is a web based typing tutor that we are evaluating. Because it is web based, students can practice keyboarding from school, home, or any device that's connected to the Internet. Click on the image below to access Typing Agent:
Mystery Partner Day is this Friday, so the students need to finish their letters.
The Fourth Graders will work on a Mystery Partner Letter to reveal who they are to their Jr. Kindergarten partners. This is a two part project. Today they will take a template letter created in Microsoft Word which they can find in their "personal folders". They will edit the letter to personalize it and use editing skills such as delete, backspace, undo, and redo. We will review the difference between using the "delete' and "backspace" keys. When finished, they will use "save as" and save the file as "Mystery Partner Letter <their name>.
