The 5th grade class read Percy Jackson books and will be writing up their book reviews in a Greek Times newspaper format using Microsoft PowerPoint. They will learn how to use columns. They will also be adding a headdress to their photos using Paint.net and adding it to their project. Here are two examples:
It looks like most of you are finishing up your Chroma Key projects. Here are a few things I want to remind you of:
Here are research sites you can use for the Travel Into History Project.
NOTE: If your background image is super small compared to your image, then you might find the photo pixelated after you crop it. You should go to Google Images and try and find an image with a larger file size. You can drop the image file you have in the search bar to try and find the exact (or similar) image and see if there is a better file. When you save the image, you should click on "view image" and then save that rather than save the thumbnail image.
The students learned about chroma keying, the process of editing out the background of a photo or video which uses a single color background and then superimposing it together with another. Usually the background color is either blue or green because it is the most different from the hue of skin color. Because many people use a green screen as a backdrop, the process is sometimes referred to as "Green Screening". The students also learned some tips on taking a good Green Screen photo to ensure cleaner editing (good lighting, eliminating shadows and wrinkles in the fabric, and not wearing green). Then the students picked out their background images and tried to imagine how they would appear in it. Then we setup a green screen and took some photos of the students posing.
For Computer Science week the students will be choosing from two Hour of Code activities from Code.org:
Next week is Computer Science week and we are planning on participating in the Hour of Code. Today we will be introducing the students to some of the concepts of Computer Programming. Here is the presentation and activity for the day:
Sample Student Websites
For the rest of this year, you will be learning how to create your own website. You'll also do other projects in computer class and post them to your website. So let's get started! How the Internet Works Video Let's start by watching a video about what happens when you try and access a website. In this video, you can replace "someone in England" with someone at "Grymes Memorial School". So imagine you're accessing the World Science Festival website. It's not perfect, but you'll get the idea. Overview of Today's Lesson
Getting Started Video Tutorials
Here's a video tutorial on how to Publish and Log Off. NOTE: According to Weebly support, if you do not click on the hyperlink to your website after publishing, additional changes to your website may automatically get published as you make them (even before you "publish" again). Wow, you guys did a great job keyboarding! Because so many of you started this year knowing how to keyboard, we set the goal higher for you than in years past. We expected you to type faster and the final test had more numbers and punctuation. Each of you had a different goal based on how well you were typing at the beginning of class. Many of you met that higher goal. For those who didn't, you still exceeded the goals we had set in years past which was 12 WPM with 85% accuracy. And for those who were new to keyboarding, you made great progress. You can keep your accounts and continue to practice. It's important for everyone to continue to keyboard with the proper fingering. If you do, you'll get faster and more accurate. If you don't, you'll forget what you've learned. Remember... Mrs. Hallum expects everyone to be keyboarding proficiently in 6th grade! So keep it up!
