Investigations Quilt Square
This lesson is tied into what the students are doing in math class. Here is a link to a description of the Investigations Quilt Square activity (you will find it about halfway down the page). Here is an excerpt: "They use motions such as flips and turns to create designs with pattern blocks, and to fill provided outlines in as many different ways as possible. They begin to think about the idea of a unit as they design quilt squares using squares and triangles, which are repeated to create a quilt pattern...They use motions such as flips and turns to create designs with pattern blocks, and to fill provided outlines in as many different ways as possible. They begin to think about the idea of a unit as they design quilt squares using squares and triangles, which are repeated to create a quilt pattern."
Class Work
Students will get a worksheet in math class, choose a quilt square pattern, and color it. They will bring their finished work to computer class.
Computer Class Skills
Students will use the Investigations Shape application to recreate their quilt square and see how the pattern looks in a 9x9 square. They will learn how to:
- add shapes to build their quilt square
- vertically and horizontally flip their shape
- rotate their shape clockwise and counterclockwise
- erase their shape
- copy their shape
- color their shape
